The government of the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) is enacting policies to tackle gambling-related issues within the community while safeguarding the sustainability of its numerous social clubs. A new advisory board is being established, comprising representatives from these clubs, groups focused on minimizing gambling harm, and labor organizations.
This board, led by Gaming Minister Shane Rattenbury, will prioritize the execution of strategies outlined in a legislative accord. These encompass a substantial decrease in the quantity of poker machine permits, the implementation of wagering restrictions per play and per session, and a reinforced program for self-exclusion.
The government acknowledges the vital function these clubs serve in the lives of many Canberra citizens – acting as social hubs and sponsors of community gatherings. The objective is to find a compromise: enabling clubs to maintain their community contributions while enacting more robust measures to alleviate the negative consequences linked to gambling.
He stressed that every organization boasts a distinct roster and objective, necessitating support initiatives customized to their particular requirements. It’s akin to a tailored garment – a universal fit simply won’t suffice!
This council convenes its inaugural gathering on May 26th, featuring a diverse assembly of interested parties – club leaders spanning the Australian Capital Territory, a Union delegate representing the workforce, and even the head of the ACT Gambling and Racing Commission. It appears they are committed to achieving collective understanding!
