Czech gaming behemoth, Allwyn Entertainment, is rumored to be in discussions to acquire its competitor, Camelot UK, the present administrator of the UK National Lottery. This unanticipated development arises after an intense bidding competition in which Allwyn secured the rights to manage the lottery commencing in 2024.
Camelot, under the ownership of the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan, is contemplating the divestiture. This situation follows legal disputes initiated by Camelot that originally postponed the transfer of lottery management to Allwyn. Nevertheless, Camelot withdrew its legal action in September, seemingly paving the path for Allwyn’s assumption of control.
Currently, discussions regarding a prospective acquisition are in progress, with a speculated valuation of £100 million ($115.4 million). Should it succeed, this agreement would enable Allwyn to assume control of the National Lottery considerably earlier than projected.
Although specifics remain limited, Allwyn acknowledged the negotiations, highlighting their dedication to a seamless changeover that advantages all stakeholders, encompassing the lottery’s philanthropic endeavors and the personnel of both entities.
The media outlet, Sky News, has reported that Camelot may withdraw its legal action against the Gambling Commission should the acquisition proceed.
While Camelot previously ceased its legal challenge concerning Allwyn obtaining the license in September, a separate lawsuit against the Gambling Commission is ongoing.
