The New South Wales, Australia gaming regulator has expressed its desire for Helen Coonan to continue as the head of Crown Resorts. They believe her guidance is vital during this tumultuous time.
ILGA Chair Philip Crawford stressed the importance of Coonan’s ongoing direction, saying, “I require her presence. Crown is experiencing difficulties, and I am at ease with her in charge. If she departed, I would be inquiring, ‘Who is next?'” He also suggested that board member Harold Mitchell should resign.
This comes after a scathing independent inquiry headed by former judge Patricia Bergin, which examined accusations of illicit financial activities at Crown casinos. The repercussions of this report compelled Crown to postpone the launch of its new $2.2 billion Sydney casino. In a recent financial update, Coonan acknowledged she was unable to provide a definite opening date for the Barangaroo casino but anticipated more information by April.
Coonan has guaranteed stakeholders that she is collaborating closely with the New South Wales gaming authority to restore their confidence and the company’s permit. She emphasized the time-sensitive nature of the situation, stating, “A decision has not been reached, but we will proceed swiftly.”
Coonan reaffirmed her dedication to steering Crown through these obstacles, stating, “The commissioner has indicated his belief that I am a suitable individual to continue guiding Crown through this process, and I am devoted to doing everything in my power to implement the changes to which we have committed.”
She clarified that her tenure as Chairperson would have a limited duration, since the quest for a successor was in progress.
