Churchill Downs Incorporated (CDI) has acquired Ellis Park Racetrack and Gaming Facility in Kentucky for a sum of $79 million.
Churchill Downs now holds ownership of Ellis Park, a racetrack with a history spanning over a century, featuring a gaming facility equipped with over 300 historical racing machines (HRMs).
CDI also has plans to construct a new racetrack and gaming facility in Owensboro, Kentucky. This new venue will boast an entertainment area featuring 600 HRMs, a simulcast wagering center, and a diverse selection of food and beverage options.
CDI intends to invest approximately $75 million in Henderson and Daviess counties over the coming year.
The transaction remains subject to approval by the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission.
Our crew is dedicated to hosting summer races at “The Pea Patch” to draw in more Kentucky steeds and coaches to remain in the state, and also draw in top racing talent from across the nation to the Bluegrass State each July and August, stated CDI Chief Executive Officer Bill Carstanjen.
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear included: “This is thrilling news for horse racing. CDI has demonstrated it has the know-how, funds, and yearning to revitalize Ellis Park into a top-tier horse racing location and offer unmatched gaming entertainment.
“This investment will guarantee our Kentucky horsemen have the best year-round racing circuit in the nation and create jobs throughout the area and state. Churchill Downs is a great corporate citizen and a vital part of the Kentucky team.”
